Meet the Golf Instructors

Stuart Smith’s passion for golf began at age three and continued through a standout junior career that included qualifying for two U.S. Junior Amateurs and becoming the youngest winner of the Roseville City Amateur. He later went on to play collegiate golf at UCLA, where he set a team scoring record with a 64 at Bel Air Country Club. After graduating with a BA in Sociology, Stuart turned professional in 1984 and began a competitive playing career that would span nearly a decade.

Over the years, Stuart has combined elite playing credentials with a deep commitment to helping others improve. His instruction is shaped by firsthand competitive experience, decades spent studying the golf swing, and an ongoing dedication to staying current with the game’s most effective coaching methods. His long tenure at Somersett reflects both his connection to the Club and his commitment to developing golfers in a way that is both personalized and results-driven.

Stuart spent nine years competing on the Ben Hogan, Nike, and South African Tours. Highlights of his professional career include a victory at the 1989 Palabora Classic and a 6th-place finish on the South African Order of Merit. He later transitioned into the club industry in 1992, serving at Sierra View Country Club and then as Director of Golf at Granite Bay Golf Club before joining Somersett.

His competitive accomplishments are equally impressive. Stuart was named Northern California PGA Player of the Year in 2004 and has made 13 combined appearances in major championships, including the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship, and U.S. Senior Open. His contributions to the game have been recognized with the Sierra Nevada Junior Golf Leader Award (2007), the NCPGA Junior Golf Leader of the Year Award (2010), and the prestigious NCPGA Professional of the Year Award (2016).

Widely regarded as one of the region’s leading instructors, Stuart is a TPI Certified Professional and emphasizes the Body–Swing Connection to build efficient, individualized swing patterns. He is also one of 450 Certified AimPoint Green Reading instructors worldwide.

In addition, Stuart is a member of the Titleist Leadership Advisory Staff and one of only 50 members nationwide of Titleist’s Elite Player Program. Known for staying current with modern coaching philosophies while maintaining an active competitive playing schedule, he remains committed to helping every golfer progress to their highest potential.

Brandy Casey’s experience in the game spans more than three decades and includes collegiate golf at the University of Montana, Mini-Tour competition, and participation in professional events. Her long-standing connection to the game is reflected not only in her experience as a player, but also in her dedication to helping others enjoy golf, develop confidence, and continue learning in a positive environment.

Brandy is especially passionate about creating opportunities for women and junior golfers. Her mission is to keep women engaged in the game and to inspire young girls to explore all the opportunities golf can provide, both on and off the course.

Since joining the LPGA Teaching & Club Professional division in 1995, Brandy has been committed to creating fun, innovative programs for golfers of all ages and abilities. Her recent PGA membership further reflects her continued investment in professional development and her broad experience within the instructional side of the game.

With a student-centered approach and a passion for making golf feel approachable, Brandy brings a valuable perspective to Somersett’s instructional team. Her background, professionalism, and enthusiasm for player development make her an outstanding resource for members looking to learn, improve, and enjoy the game.

Originally from Indiana, Rob began his golf industry career in Tucson after graduating from Indiana University, earning his PGA membership in 2006. His path later led him to San Francisco, where he served nearly seven years as Head Professional at The Presidio.

From there, Rob continued to build his leadership experience through roles at Bonita Bay Club in Naples and as General Manager at Eagle Landing Golf Club in Jacksonville. Rob and his wife Jess later relocated to Reno, where she completed her graduate degree at UNR. Since arriving at Somersett, Rob has remained focused on strengthening the member experience and supporting the Club’s continued growth.

Rob’s background reflects a broad mix of golf operations, leadership, and instruction. His experience spans private club environments, public facilities, and management roles that have shaped a strong understanding of both player development and overall club operations.

As PGA Director of Golf at Somersett, Rob brings this diverse perspective to the instructional side of the game as well. His approach emphasizes clear, manageable information that helps golfers understand cause and effect within the swing. He prefers to enhance a player’s existing motion rather than completely rebuild it, focusing on strong pre-swing fundamentals such as grip, aim, stance, and ball position, along with coordinated movement and balance throughout the swing.

Corey is a graduate of the San Diego Golf Academy and has built his career through a variety of respected roles within the golf industry. Before stepping into leadership at Somersett, he gained experience with TaylorMade, Adidas Golf, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and ArrowCreek Country Club.

Since joining Somersett in 2013, Corey has become a familiar and trusted part of the Club’s golf operation. His long tenure reflects both his dedication to the game and his investment in creating an excellent experience for members and guests alike.

In addition to his club and retail golf background, Corey has served as coach of the McQueen High School Boys’ Golf Team, helping lead the program to two Northern Nevada 5A Regional Championships. He has also officiated regional playoff basketball since 2009, reflecting a broader commitment to sports, leadership, and community involvement.

Corey’s experience across instruction, operations, and coaching gives him a well-rounded understanding of the game and the needs of a wide variety of players. As PGA Head Golf Professional, he remains committed to delivering an exceptional member experience while fostering continued growth in the game.
